About This Project

This was a project I worked on for for my first Grad School residency in Vermont. The thinking behind my approach had to do with the impressions people made. Not only the impressions they made on me and the warmth and welcome that I felt, but more specifically their footprints, the journeys they were on, where they came from, where they were going and the steps they were taking to get there. What better way to portray this than to visualize with the impression of literal footprints. When I arrived, there was still some snow on the ground and there was a lot of mud. This mixture made for some really good footprints. They were everywhere, going in and out of buildings, on the sidewalks and streets.

They captivated me in their mix of texture and variety. I started capturing them every time I would see a unique one. I ended up creating a pretty large library of shots. The challenge was what to do with all of them. I wanted to make a book but didn’t think that was enough to tell the story. I kept trying to think in a literal sense of paths or journeys. I finally came up with the idea to make a “path” and a book in one. This piece ended up being 120” long when unfolded to reveal the path and accordion folded down to a 10”x10” booklet with a wrap.
